For years the logic of Express Entry was brutally simple: your score ranked you, and if you were above the round’s cut-off you received an invitation. That logic still exists, but it is no longer the only one — and that is excellent news for Tunisian applicants.
How category-based rounds work
IRCC now runs invitation rounds reserved for specific profiles: francophone candidates, healthcare professionals, skilled trades, science and technology, education, agriculture. In these rounds you no longer compete against the entire pool, only against candidates in the same category. Mechanically, the cut-off falls.
The difference is far from symbolic. Where a general round may demand a very high score, a francophone round regularly invites candidates well below it. For a 34-year-old Tunisian engineer stuck in the general ranking, that is often the difference between waiting indefinitely and leaving within the year.
French, the main Tunisian asset
Canada has set ambitious targets for francophone immigration outside Québec, and it is far from meeting them without candidates from the Maghreb. A Tunisian who scores well on the TEF or TCF Canada enters directly into the most sought-after category in the system. It is, very concretely, the best-rewarded and most under-exploited comparative advantage available.
We regularly see applicants spend months improving their English when a properly taken French test would have opened a dedicated round within weeks.
What to do with this, concretely
- Take a recognised French test even if your English is already good: the two accumulate in the score.
- Verify the exact occupation code for your job: category membership depends entirely on it.
- Keep your profile active and up to date: a missed invitation cannot be recovered.
- Do not neglect provincial programs in parallel: a provincial nomination remains the most powerful lever in the system.
One essential caveat: the categories selected and the cut-offs are revised regularly by IRCC. A strategy built on last year’s category may be obsolete this year. Before committing money, have it confirmed that your profile matches the categories currently in force.
